Multiplex Independent and Art Cinema Dedicated Theater Opening in Suwon for 5,000 Won

A multiplex theater dedicated to independent and art films, offering admission for 5,000 won, is opening in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

On the 4th, Gyeonggi Province announced that on the 5th, it will open the ‘Gyeonggi Indie Cinema Hall,’ a theater dedicated to independent and art films, at Lotte Cinema Gwanggyo Hall 1 (4th floor of Lotte Mall Gwanggyo) in Suwon. This is the first time in the country that a local government has partnered with a major multiplex company (Lotte Cinema) to directly operate a public independent film theater on a regular basis.

Considering the challenging conditions of the independent film industry, which has fewer opportunities for release compared to commercial films, Gyeonggi Province proactively supported the screening of excellent independent and art films in a space frequented by many people.

Through the Gyeonggi Indie Cinema Hall in Gwanggyo, Gyeonggi Province will support the year-round screening of diverse films such as independent and art films and documentaries, differentiated from commercial films, and plans to operate various side events including Q&A sessions with directors.

In particular, a special screening will be held throughout April to commemorate the opening. The films to be screened include 10 recent independent and art films that have attracted attention, such as ‘John of Interest,’ which won the International Feature Film Award at the 2024 Academy Awards, and ‘Jangson,’ which won the KBS Independent Film Award at the Busan International Film Festival. The ticket price is set at 5,000 won, allowing anyone to enjoy independent and art films in a comfortable environment without financial burden.

Kang Ji-sook, Director of the Content Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "The Gyeonggi Indie Cinema Hall will provide independent film creators with better opportunities for release and offer audiences a space to enjoy diverse films at an affordable price. We will continue to spare no effort in supporting the expansion of the diversity film base."
