Two Thatched Houses in Andong Hahoe Village on Fire... "Extinguishing Remaining Flames"

A fire broke out on the roofs of two thatched houses in the World Cultural Heritage site, Hahoe Village.

According to the Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters on the 3rd, at around 8:05 PM that day, a fire started when sparks from a chimney of a thatched house in Pungcheon-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongbuk, ignited the rice straw covering the roof. The fire spread to part of the roof of the neighboring thatched house.

Additionally, one resident in their 70s suffered second-degree burns on a finger due to the fire.

The authorities deployed 42 firefighting personnel and 16 pieces of equipment including fire trucks, and extinguished the major fire by 8:55 PM, 50 minutes after it started.

They are currently removing the burnt roof and cleaning up the remaining embers.

A Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters official stated, "It is presumed that sparks from the house’s furnace spread to the roof, causing the fire to spread and burn part of the neighboring house’s roof as well," adding, "We are investigating the extent of property damage."
