Establishing Core Sectors in Phase Two
900 Million KRW Invested Per Island Over Two Years
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jung Kimyung) announced on the 3rd that Ando and Chodo (Uiseong) have been selected as part of the second phase of the "Island Area Specialization Project" led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
With this, two more islands have been added following Hwataedo, which passed the second-phase screening last year.
The "Island Area Specialization Project" is a national policy initiative that supports residents in forming specialized village communities, discovering key projects, and generating income. Depending on performance, up to 5 billion KRW will be invested in each island over nine years.
With this selection, Ando in Nam-myeon and Chodo Uiseong in Samsan-myeon will each receive 900 million KRW over two years to establish core sectors as part of the second-phase project.
The project funds will be used for ▲resident-led content development ▲building infrastructure to discover, select, and expand key village projects ▲education and consulting to strengthen residents' self-reliance.
Previously, in March, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety accepted second-phase applications from 18 islands already implementing the first phase, out of 188 designated for development in special situations. After document and on-site evaluations, seven islands were finally selected.
A city official stated, "Through the Island Area Specialization Project, we plan to strengthen the foundation of island regions and empower residents, making them 'islands people want to visit and live on.' We also expect that creating sustainable islands will contribute to the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo."
Meanwhile, Yeosu City is currently implementing the first phase of the 2024 Island Area Specialization Project on Geumodo (Songgo), Hahwado, Gaedo, and Myodo (Changchon), investing 400 million KRW per island. Hwataedo, which was promoted to the second phase in the same year, is focusing on developing key products using local specialties.
