GIST Hosts Solo Exhibition 'Goguryeo' by Artist Park Hasun

GIST Hosts Solo Exhibition 'Goguryeo' by Artist Park Hasun 2025 Oryong Art Hall 2nd Exhibition "Goguryeo" Poster.

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Lim Ki-chul) announced on the 3rd that the Oryong Art Hall will hold photographer Park Hasun's solo exhibition "Goguryeo" as the second invitational exhibition of the year, running until the 29th of next month.

This exhibition is the first photography exhibition to be held at Oryong Art Hall since its opening in December 2022, featuring 18 photographs of Goguryeo relics taken by Park Hasun over a period of ten years. The works capture sites bearing traces of Goguryeo, ranging from the Liaoning region in China to Chungju in the south.

Park Hasun, originally a navigator, has continued his photographic work while traveling across the five oceans. Since 1984, he has established a unique position as a documentary photographer by visiting remote and conflict regions around the world, recording their lives and cultures.

His representative works include photographs taken along the Oasis Silk Road and Maritime Silk Road, and in 2021, he won the World Press Photo Award for his work depicting the Tibetan funeral custom "Sky Burial."

Park Hasun has sought to document scenes of human life and revive our buried history through photography by following traces left in ancient records, capturing Goguryeo relics with his camera. His photographs vividly convey the strength and spirit of Goguryeo, leaving a profound impact.

This "Goguryeo" exhibition features the unveiling of the "Jian Tomb No. 5 Mural" photograph taken in 1996. This mural is a rare resource, as photography has been prohibited since 2000, and it vividly conveys the dynamism of Goguryeo art through its ornate decorative patterns, images of guardian deities, and the use of indigo and red colors.

Park Hasun stated, "I hope this exhibition will make a small contribution to reviving the spirit of our nation by emulating the vigor of Goguryeo."
