"Government and Companies Must Cooperate"

On the afternoon of the 2nd, the Presidential Office announced that it held the 7th Defense Industry Export Strategy Evaluation Meeting at the Yongsan Defense Convention, chaired by In Seong-hwan, the 2nd Deputy Director of the National Security Office, to discuss current issues and development strategies for defense industry exports.
At this meeting, participants reviewed the export promotion status for this year amid rapidly changing domestic and international economic and security situations, and discussed various development plans for sustainable K-Defense exports.
Attendees included officials from government ministries such as the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Defense Acquisition Program Administration, as well as defense companies including Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Ocean, Hyundai Rotem, Poongsan, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and LIG Nex1. Representatives from the Korea Defense Industry Association, Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Defense Material Trade Support Center, and Agency for Defense Development also participated.
The participants agreed to closely cooperate to achieve the challenging defense export target of over 20 billion USD this year amid fluid domestic and international circumstances. They also reached a consensus that the government and companies must collaborate on several ongoing defense export negotiations, including the second implementation contract negotiation for the K2 tank with Poland.
Furthermore, they examined the impact of changes in the U.S. government's security and industrial policy directions on South Korea's defense exports and discussed response strategies, as well as exchanged views on cooperation plans in the shipbuilding sector. Measures to counter the checks from major competing defense countries were also discussed.
In Seong-hwan, the 2nd Deputy Director of the National Security Office, stated, "The defense industry is a strategic industry that greatly contributes to the national economy and job creation. To achieve the status of a 'Global Top 4 Defense Power,' the government and companies must cooperate as one team. We will further develop government support policies by considering the various opinions discussed today."
