Special Exhibition at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History until June 15
Jointly Organized with the National Theater of Korea
A Retrospective of 100 Years of Korean Performing Arts
The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, in collaboration with the National Theater of Korea, is presenting the exhibition "Performing Arts, Embracing the Era," which explores the flow of domestic performing arts since the 20th century, until June 15.
This exhibition traces the footsteps of modern and contemporary Korean performing arts, examining how performing arts have captured and reflected the spirit of the times on stage.
The exhibition is divided into two parts. Part 1, "Performing Arts, Breathing with the Era," explores the trends of Korean performing arts since the 20th century through various materials. It vividly highlights the formation process of modern Korean performing arts, the establishment of the National Theater of Korea which laid the foundation for contemporary Korean performing arts, and the creation of national arts organizations. Visitors can also see images from the opening of the Myeongdong National Theater (now Myeongdong Arts Theater) in the 1960s and construction photos of the Jangchung-dong National Theater in the 1970s.
Part 2, "Stage Design, Creating Performances," focuses on stage designs, props, and costumes from major performances held at the National Theater. Notably, stage costumes and props from the National Changgeuk Company’s productions such as "Farewell My Concubine," "King Lear," "Tree, Fish, Moon," and "Jeongnyeon" are exhibited for the first time. Additionally, visitors can view stage costumes from representative works of the National Dance Company, including "Mokhyang" and "Whirlwind."
The exhibition is free to attend. For more details, please refer to the websites of the National Theater of Korea Performing Arts Museum and the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.
