The 1st Mapo Seoyunbok Marathon to be Held on April 19

The "1st Mapo Seo Yoon-bok Marathon" (hereinafter referred to as the "Seo Yoon-bok Marathon"), to be held on April 19, 2025, at World Cup Park in Mapo-gu, is accepting participant applications until April 7.

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) is hosting the "Seo Yoon-bok Marathon" for the first time nationwide to honor the great achievements of the late athlete Seo Yoon-bok and to reflect on the history of marathon running.

This event is jointly organized by the Seo Yoon-bok Memorial Project Promotion Committee and the Korea Sports for All Federation, with support from the alumni association of Sungmoon Middle and High School, the alma mater of the late Seo Yoon-bok.

The late Seo Yoon-bok is a legend in Korean marathon history, having won the 1947 international marathon, the Boston Marathon, setting a world record while carrying the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) for the first time. He is also the protagonist of the film "1947 Boston."

On September 5, 2024, Mapo-gu officially designated a 1.1 km section from Ewha Womans University Station to Daehang Station, where Seo Yoon-bok’s alma mater Sungmoon High School is located, as the honorary road "Seo Yoon-bok-gil," leading efforts to publicize his achievements.

The "Seo Yoon-bok Marathon," which honors his achievements and values, carries historical significance beyond being a simple sporting event.

Moreover, April 19, the date of the marathon, is the anniversary of the late Seo Yoon-bok’s victory at the Boston Marathon, making the event even more meaningful.

The marathon course starts at Peace Plaza in World Cup Park, Mapo-gu, and runs along the Han River. The race categories include 5km, 10km, and half marathon, with entry fees of 45,000 KRW for 5km and 50,000 KRW for 10km and half marathon.

A total of 7,000 participants will be accepted, and all participants will receive commemorative T-shirts, medals, snacks, and various other souvenirs.

On the day of the event, Mapo-gu plans to secure a safe environment for participants by controlling traffic on some roads from World Cup Park to Guryong Intersection.

The marathon is open to all ages and genders, and applications can be submitted online through the official event website. Registration closes on April 7.

For more details about participation, inquiries can be made to the Mapo Seo Yoon-bok Marathon Secretariat.

Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "The 'Seo Yoon-bok Marathon' will be an occasion to honor and remember Seo Yoon-bok, who brought hope and joy to our people," adding, "Starting with this event, we will carry on Seo Yoon-bok’s spirit of challenge and strive to develop the 'Seo Yoon-bok Marathon' into a proud international event of Mapo-gu, with much interest and effort."
