The festival will open on the 3rd at 6 PM with an opening ceremony at the Yangjaecheon waterfront stage. The event will begin with an opening performance featuring traditional arts students from Korea National University of Arts performing street parades, pungmul (traditional Korean percussion music), and lion dances, followed by the outdoor opera festival ‘La Traviata’ featuring top domestic and international opera singers. After sunset, a lighting ceremony will create a nightscape along Yangjaecheon that is even more beautiful than during the day.
On the 4th, busking performances will take place, and as night falls along Yangjaecheon, visitors can enjoy the romance of spring nights with cherry blossoms through an outdoor cinema. On the 5th, a special performance of the Korean version of Cirque du Soleil, ‘Dongchun Circus,’ suitable for the whole family, will be held, along with a high-class cultural feast featuring the opera ‘Madama Butterfly.’ On the 6th, various contents including ‘Bubble Fantasia,’ enjoyable for the entire family, will be presented.
The core contents of the month-long ‘Yangjaecheon Cherry Blossom Lantern Festival,’ the ‘Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition’ and the ‘Media Art Exhibition,’ will be held around the Yangjaecheon waterfront stage during the festival period. The ‘Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition’ and ‘Media Art Exhibition,’ featuring about 20 large-scale works by famous domestic and international artists, are expected to transform Yangjaecheon into a new cultural and artistic landmark in the city.
Another attraction of the festival, the Art Flea Market, will offer various handmade products such as art, crafts, and clothing, as well as organic agricultural products from various regions and desserts. Additionally, the cherry blossom-themed experience zone will be designed for people of all ages to enjoy with their families, and food trucks will serve freshly prepared menus such as gambas, takoyaki, and churros.
Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “This year’s Yangjaecheon Cherry Blossom Lantern Festival was planned as an ‘Outdoor Opera Festival’ reflecting the demands of Seocho residents,” adding, “We hope everyone enjoys the opera music and diverse cultural and artistic programs amid the beautiful night scenery dyed with cherry blossoms and lanterns along Yangjaecheon.”
