Revealed During the Process of a Station Staff Finding the Lost Tablet PC
Two people in their 20s, who met online and are the same age, were sentenced to prison for bringing drugs from overseas and transporting them into the country.
The Criminal Division 2 of Chuncheon District Court (Chief Judge Kim Seong-rae) announced on the 30th that A (28) and B (28), who were indicted on charges of stimulant drugs under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, were sentenced to 10 years and 6 years in prison, respectively.
The two were prosecuted for traveling to London on September 7 last year, receiving about 6 kg of ketamine worth 390 million KRW, and bringing it into the country through Incheon International Airport.
A was also charged with transporting about 6 kg of ketamine worth 195 million KRW into the country alone on September 1, earlier than the above incident.
According to the investigation, the two met by chance while looking for part-time jobs online. Later, in August last year, A received a proposal from an unknown person to "go to Europe for a few days to bring drugs, and will pay 4 million KRW as a fee, covering accommodation and airfare expenses," and committed the crime.
Their crime was uncovered when a station staff found a tablet PC that A had lost at Chuncheon Station.
When the station staff opened KakaoTalk to identify the owner of the tablet, content related to private loans and illegal gambling appeared. The Telegram chat contents used by A before losing the tablet contained detailed information about drug distribution crimes.
Eventually, following the station staff’s report, an investigation was conducted, and the two were arrested at the airport upon their return on September 11 of the same year.
A and B claimed that the evidence collected by the investigative agency from the lost tablet was illegal, but the court ruled that the evidence was lawfully obtained.
The court sentenced A to 10 years in prison, stating, "In A’s case, the amount of drugs imported in two instances was considerable, and he even proposed the additional crime to B, gaining a significant amount of criminal proceeds."
Considering that the drugs imported by B were not distributed on the market and that B had no prior criminal record, the court sentenced B to 6 years in prison.
