At Least 43 Workers Trapped at the Accident Site

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck inland central Myanmar also affected Bangkok, Thailand. A high-rise building under construction collapsed, trapping dozens of workers at the accident site.


According to foreign media reports, on the 28th (local time), a building under construction in Bangkok collapsed. At least 43 workers were buried in the accident.

Videos capturing the tense construction site at the time are spreading on global social networking services (SNS) such as X. As the ground began to shake, the building collapsed in an instant, releasing thick dust clouds. The video ends with workers hurriedly evacuating from beneath the construction site. Although the authenticity of the video has not been confirmed, various videos of the accident from different angles are currently being shared on SNS.

AP News also reported eyewitness accounts from tourists who were at the scene during the earthquake. Fraser Morton, a tourist from Scotland, told the media, "I was at a shopping mall in Bangkok when the building suddenly shook. Soon after, there were screams and a fearful atmosphere," adding, "I evacuated to a park far from the high-rise buildings."


The Thai Disaster Prevention Center also announced that tremors were detected throughout Thailand, including Bangkok. During the shaking, citizens were reportedly unable to enter buildings and anxiously waited outdoors in preparation for aftershocks and further damage.


Meanwhile, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in Myanmar around 12:50 p.m. that day. The location was identified as 33 km southwest of Mandalay (Myanmar's second-largest city with a population of about 1.2 million) and 248 km north-northwest of the capital, Naypyidaw.


The earthquake was also reported to have been felt in neighboring Thailand's Bangkok as well as Yunnan Province in China.
