Imirae Unveils "Hometown to Come" at MMCA Seoul
On View at the Multidisciplinary Space Until the 30th
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) is presenting Imirae's new performance work, "Hometown to Come," as part of the multidisciplinary arts program "Space Elevator" at the MMCA Seoul Multidisciplinary Space until the 30th.
The multidisciplinary arts project "Space Elevator" is an annual program exploring humanity's desire for space and ways to realize it from various artistic perspectives. Imirae, the final participating artist in the monthly program held at the Seoul branch since May last year, focuses on the traces left by humanity's grand challenges such as space development.
"Hometown to Come" is the artist's first performance, visually embodying the paradoxical temporality of "already arrived but not yet come," which has been implicitly addressed in her previous installation works. The installation, created by dismantling and recombining waste collected from the outskirts of Seoul and previous works, is presented suspended in the air to the track "Dopesmoker" from the band Sleep's album. The movement of the suspended installation visually depicts the landscape of debris created by human desires, successes, and failures.
The artist explained, "Waste is the flip side of production and the place where all the dreams we dream will eventually return." She added, "In this project, the image of debris is not simply something we struggle to forget but a landscape that is always right behind us, closely attached."
The work is divided into exhibition and live performance modes. The exhibition is open for viewing until the 30th. Live performances will be held on the 28th at 5 PM, the 29th at 5 PM and 8 PM, and the 30th at 2 PM and 5 PM. Musician Lee Minhwi and actor Bae Seonhee will participate as performers. Attendance for the performances is available through advance reservation on the MMCA website.
Kim Seonghee, director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, stated, "This performance marks the finale of the multidisciplinary arts project 'Space Elevator.' Through the fragments shown by artist Imirae within space and time, it will be an opportunity to contemplate new possibilities for communal life and modes of existence."
