Goryeong County Conducts Emergency Disaster Prevention Activities to Protect Cultural Heritage from Wildfires

Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province has taken action to protect vulnerable local cultural heritage sites and traditional temples following a series of wildfires nationwide and the issuance of a "Severe" level national wildfire disaster alert.

Since the 26th, the county has conducted emergency fire safety inspections and established on-site fire prevention measures for a total of 41 designated cultural heritage sites, including nationally and provincially designated important wooden cultural properties that are vulnerable to fire, 2 traditional temples, and 13 designated local cultural heritage sites.

To this end, the county has checked the proper operation of fire extinguishers and fire safety facilities installed in national heritage sites and temples, replacing expired fire extinguishers as necessary. In addition, an evacuation and preservation plan for national heritage assets has been established in preparation for emergencies caused by wildfires.

In Goryeong County, banners warning against wildfires have been posted in areas including the Jisan-dong Ancient Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site and national historic site, as well as Jusanseong Fortress and the Goari Mural Tombs. Public officials and temporary workers are guiding and informing visitors to prevent them from entering areas outside of hiking trails.

County Governor Lee Namcheol stated, "This emergency fire safety inspection is being conducted on important facilities vulnerable to fire, such as local cultural heritage sites and traditional temples. We will continue to respond thoroughly with regular quarterly inspections and maintenance of fire safety facilities. We will also strengthen on-site preventive measures to prepare for wildfires and do our utmost to prevent loss due to fire."
