Emphasizing Measures to Revitalize Returning to Farming and Rural Migration
and Respond to Population Decline
"We must govern the county with the mindset of building a cathedral."
Jang Gilseon, Chairman of the Gurye County Council, said this in an interview with Asia Economy on the 26th, emphasizing, "For Gurye County to become a central destination for returning farmers and urban migrants, a long-term vision and practical support are essential."
Chairman Jang stated, "As aging intensifies in Gurye County, the issue of population decline is becoming more serious," adding, "We need to strengthen practical benefits and settlement support to attract younger generations."
He also explained, "When 19 billion KRW was first allocated as a fund to respond to population extinction, I even thought, 'What if we just directly support those who return to farming with 100 million KRW each?' This shows how important it is to provide tangible benefits."
He argued that administrative procedures should be simplified and various support measures should be prepared so that those wishing to return to farming or move to rural areas can settle more easily.
He continued, "If we provide a stable foundation for life, even people from outside the region will take interest," adding, "Rather than simply providing subsidies, we must improve settlement conditions and pursue sustainable policies."
Chairman Jang stressed that policies should be pursued from a long-term perspective rather than focusing on short-term achievements.
He said, "We must govern the county with the mindset of building a cathedral. Cathedrals exist for 100, 200, even 300 years, don't they? We must pursue policies with that same mindset. Instead of trying to achieve immediate results, we should set the right direction and let our successors complete the work," he said.
He added, "So far, we have focused only on what changes, but now we must pay attention to what does not change," highlighting the need for policies that preserve the fundamental values of the local community.
Chairman Jang emphasized, "Sustainable policies are essential for Gurye to change and develop," and called for active interest and cooperation from the residents.
He said, "To encourage returning to farming and rural migration and to revitalize the local economy, we will pursue policies that reflect the opinions of the residents," adding, "I will value each and every resident's opinion and actively reflect them in county administration."
In conclusion, Chairman Jang requested the cooperation of the residents, stating, "I will govern the county with a long-term vision so that Gurye can achieve sustainable development."
