Jeollajwasuyeong Dookje Ritual and Naval Departure Ceremony
to Be Reenacted at Yi Sunshin Square and Jinnamgwan Area
until November 8
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Chung Kimyung) announced that the Jeollajwasuyeong Dookje, a ritual performed by Admiral Yi Sunshin before heading to battle, and the Naval Departure Ceremony will be reenacted from the 29th until November 8 at Yi Sunshin Square and the surrounding area of Jinnamgwan.
The event will be held a total of 12 times, every 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month (the 1st and 4th Saturdays in October, and the 2nd Saturday in November) from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, except during the hot summer months (July and August). Until the reopening of Jinnamgwan (scheduled for the end of April), the event will take place at Yi Sunshin Square and Marine Park.
This year, historical accuracy will be enhanced to maximize audience immersion. Centered around the Yeosu Municipal Gugak Orchestra, the event will consist of Part 1, the Jeollajwasuyeong Dookje Ritual, and Part 2, a military inspection and the Naval Departure Ceremony. After a street parade at Yi Sunshin Square, the event will conclude with a final performance at Jinnamgwan.
The 'Jeollajwasuyeong Dookje' is a ritual performed by Admiral Yi Sunshin before departing for battle during the Imjin War, praying for victory and overcoming national crisis, and offering sacrifices to the Dookgi (military flag). In 2007, it was selected as the first project for the government's traditional arts restoration initiative, and Yeosu City has been developing it as a cultural and artistic brand project.
A city official stated, "This year's Jeollajwasuyeong Dookje will offer an even more impressive spectacle than last year," and added, "We will continue to promote the historical significance of Yeosu, a city of patriotism and filial piety, to citizens and tourists, and further develop this as a representative cultural and artistic brand project for the region."
