Park Hyungjoon, Mayor of Busan:
"New Vitality for Busan's Iconic Jagalchi Market"
The face of Busan's Jagalchi Market, once lined with rows of seafood street stalls, is undergoing a complete transformation. Its name has even been changed to "Jagalchi Ajimae Market."
The city of Busan (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced on the 27th that it will newly establish the Jagalchi Ajimae Market to relocate illegal street vendors around Jagalchi and to strengthen food hygiene and safety. The market will officially open at the end of June.
Jagalchi Ajimae Market will provide legal rental spaces for seafood sales facilities to street vendors who previously occupied the roads around Jagalchi Market, which is one of Busan's top tourist attractions.
It was built as part of the "Jagalchi Seafood Landmark Project," aimed at strengthening food hygiene and safety and creating a leading marine and fisheries cultural tourism complex in Korea by connecting with nearby tourism resources.
A total of 23.5 billion KRW was invested from 2014 to 2024 to complete the construction of phases 1 and 2. To restore the roads illegally occupied by street vendors around Jagalchi Market, the Jung-gu District Office carried out road expansion work in parallel, aiming to improve traffic efficiency and the environment in the Jagalchi area.
Busan City will hold an on-site store allocation lottery from April 16 to 18 for three days, targeting street vendors who submitted advance lottery applications among the 216 individuals confirmed as eligible to move into Jagalchi Ajimae Market.
Since 2015, the city has conducted surveys on the status of street vendors around Jagalchi Market to select eligible tenants. Advance lottery applications can be submitted in person at the Busan Facilities Corporation Jagalchi Market Office from April 7 to April 11, along with the required documents.
Busan City and the Busan Facilities Corporation (President Lee Seongrim) will hold a lottery information session at 4 p.m. on the 31st in the main conference room of the Busan Fisheries Cooperative Jagalchi Auction House, providing prior guidance on the store allocation lottery method, contract procedures and period, store size and placement, usage fees, and project schedule.
The corporation will manage the operation of Jagalchi Ajimae Market and, to integrate it with the adjacent "Jagalchi Modernized Market," completed organizational restructuring and staff assignments in January.
Based on its expertise and on-site experience in safely and efficiently managing major public facilities in Busan, the corporation plans to create a pleasant market environment and develop Jagalchi Ajimae Market into Busan's representative seafood market and tourist attraction.
In addition, the corporation plans to complete the approval process for the use of public property by tenants by the end of May and finish preparations such as individual store interiors by the end of June.
Mayor Park Hyungjoon of Busan stated, "With the full operation of Jagalchi Ajimae Market, we will improve the environment of the iconic Jagalchi Market area and restore road functions to revitalize the local commercial district. Our city will continue to gather diverse opinions from the community and support the joint growth of both residents and merchants."
