Increases Driven by Salary Savings and Rising Official Housing Prices
As of the end of last year, the average declared assets of 2,047 senior central and local government officials under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, including themselves and their families, amounted to 2.06314 billion KRW per person. This represents an increase of approximately 62.01 million KRW compared to the average assets previously declared by the same individuals.
On the 27th, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission disclosed the asset details of public officials subject to disclosure, including political appointees under the executive branch, senior civil servants of grade A, presidents of national universities, heads of public institutions related to government offices, metropolitan and basic local government heads, metropolitan council members, and city/provincial superintendents of education, through the Public Ethics System (PETI) and the official gazette.
This year, the average assets of those subject to disclosure were 2.06314 billion KRW. Among them, 1,440 individuals, accounting for 70.3%, reported an increase in assets compared to their previous declarations, while 607 individuals, or 29.7%, reported a decrease.
By ownership, of the average declared assets (2.06314 billion KRW), the individual owned 1.08952 billion KRW (52.8%), the spouse 803.68 million KRW (39.0%), and direct ascendants and descendants 169.94 million KRW (8.2%).
The main factors for asset increase were net asset growth such as salary savings, accounting for 53.49 million KRW (86%), and valuation changes due to rises in official housing prices and individual land price announcements, accounting for 8.52 million KRW (14%). Factors for decrease included stock price drops and refusal to accept notices.
The Presidential Office disclosed the asset declarations of 54 individuals, excluding President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was detained during the asset declaration period.
Among senior secretaries at the level of chief secretary or higher in the Presidential Office, Hong Cheol-ho, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, declared the highest assets at 26.1379 billion KRW, followed by Jang Ho-jin, Special Advisor for Foreign Affairs and Security, with 16.03983 billion KRW.
Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office, declared 14.803 billion KRW, and Sung Tae-yoon, Director of the Policy Office, declared 10.14249 billion KRW, both holding assets exceeding 10 billion KRW.
Chief Secretary Jeong Jin-seok declared assets worth 8.88839 billion KRW, and Wang Yoon-jong, Third Deputy Director of the National Security Office, declared 8.71756 billion KRW.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo declared 8.7039 billion KRW, and Yoo In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, declared 17.735 billion KRW, marking the highest amount in the cabinet.
