To Be Applied for Four Months Starting March 29
The Japanese government will impose a provisional anti-dumping tariff of 95.2% on Chinese-made graphite electrodes for four months starting from the 29th of this month.
According to Kyodo News and NHK on the 26th, the Japanese government confirmed this policy at the Cabinet meeting the previous day.
Graphite electrodes are products necessary for making steel by melting scrap iron and other materials in electric furnaces.
Three Japanese graphite electrode companies requested the imposition of anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese products in February last year, and the Japanese government concluded in an interim report that China was exporting graphite electrodes at unfairly low prices, causing damage to Japanese companies.
The Japanese government's action is a provisional measure under World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations, and if the Japanese government determines in the final conclusion that Chinese graphite electrodes were exported at low prices, anti-dumping tariffs may be imposed for up to five years.
Kyodo News explained that "there is an intention to minimize the damage to Japanese companies."
