TSMC to Start 2nm Orders Next Month... Apple Likely to Be First Customer

"Mass Production of 2nm Products in the Second Half of This Year"

Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) company, is reportedly set to begin accepting orders next month ahead of the mass production of its cutting-edge 2㎚ (1㎚ = one billionth of a meter) process products in the second half of this year.

According to Taiwan media such as Economic Daily on the 25th, TSMC plans to start simultaneous mass production of 2㎚ process products at the Bao Shan plant in the Hsinchu Science Park and the Kaohsiung plant in the second half of the year.

㎚ is a unit that refers to the semiconductor circuit line width. The narrower the line width, the lower the power consumption and the faster the processing speed. Currently, the world's most advanced mass production technology is 3㎚.

TSMC will hold an expansion event for the Kaohsiung 2㎚ plant on the 31st and will start accepting orders for the second half of the year on the 1st of next month.

It is expected to be capable of producing 50,000 wafers per month by the end of the year.

Guo Mingqi, an analyst at Taiwan's TF International Securities, analyzed on X (formerly Twitter) on the 23rd that the yield rate (ratio of good products to total production) of the 2㎚ process products in trial production has likely exceeded 70%.

Industry insiders expect Apple to be the first customer for the 2㎚ products.

Guo, an Apple expert, said, "The Apple iPhone 18 series, to be released in the second half of next year, will include 2㎚ products."

AMD, Intel, Broadcom, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are also mentioned as potential customers.
