Dongdaemun-gu, Newly Designated as a Lifelong Learning City for People with Disabilities in 2025

Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 24th that it has been selected for the Ministry of Education's National Institute of Special Education's “2025 New Designation of Lifelong Learning Cities for Persons with Disabilities” project, securing 30 million KRW in national funding.

The “Lifelong Learning City for Persons with Disabilities” project provides customized education by region and target group to ensure that persons with disabilities are not excluded from education and their right to lifelong learning is guaranteed. Through this, it aims to promote social integration and improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

Based on the vision of “Creating a Lifelong Learning City for Persons with Disabilities that Opens Greater Happiness,” the district will establish lifelong learning centers for persons with disabilities linked with the public, private, and academic sectors, creating a lifelong learning city where persons with and without disabilities learn together. The goal is to achieve continuous designation as a “Lifelong Learning City for Persons with Disabilities” in 2026 by promoting customized education programs.

Key programs include ▲VR physical activities for persons with disabilities ▲basketball workshops for families of persons with disabilities ▲ceramics classes for persons with developmental disabilities ▲self-makeup and customized skincare education ▲smartphone photography classes ▲calligraphy ▲exciting Nanta drumming classes ▲latest trend broadcast dance ▲basic sign language classes ▲vocational skills enhancement education for persons with developmental disabilities.

To facilitate smooth project implementation, an “Activator Training Course for Lifelong Education for Persons with Disabilities” will be held over eight sessions from April 29 to May 15. Residents wishing to participate can apply from April 7 on the Dongdaemun-gu Lifelong Learning Center website. For more details, inquiries can be made to the Lifelong Learning Center.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “With this new designation as a Lifelong Learning City for Persons with Disabilities, we will create a lifelong learning environment where no one is excluded and everyone learns together.”
