Daejeon City’s “Daedeok Innopolis Research Institutes Weekend Opening Program,” which has been promoted to spread scientific culture and expand citizen experience opportunities, is entering its third year and will be further expanded this year.
On the 24th, the city signed a memorandum of understanding for the “Daedeok Innopolis Research Institutes Weekend Opening” with 11 organizations, including the National Research Council of Science and Technology, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea Institute of Energy Research, Korea Basic Science Institute, Korea Institute of Fusion Energy, Korea Minting, Security Printing and ID Card Operating Corporation, and Hankook Tire & Technology Co., Ltd. (Hankook Technodome).
This year, the weekend openings will begin in April with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, and participating institutions will sequentially open in a relay format. Citizens will have the opportunity to directly see, hear, and experience the main achievements and sites of the nation’s core research institutes.
In particular, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea Institute of Fusion Energy, and Korea Minting, Security Printing and ID Card Operating Corporation?which have previously been difficult to open to the public due to security reasons?will participate for the first time, raising expectations.
The weekend opening program will include research lab tours guided by active researchers, as well as various science experiences and lectures, providing citizens with easy and engaging opportunities to encounter science.
The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, the first institution to open this year, is the first government-funded research institute in Daedeok Innopolis and the nation’s leading science institute overseeing national measurement standards. It will introduce cutting-edge equipment and technologies, including quantum computers, and also open its beautiful natural scenery, such as Newton’s apple tree, a pond, and double cherry blossoms, to the public.
Tours will be operated on a reservation basis, and citizens wishing to participate can apply through the Daejeon Science Tour website.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, “I deeply appreciate the active participation of the Daedeok Innopolis research institutes in communicating with citizens,” adding, “Daejeon City will continue to closely cooperate with research institutes to ensure that Daedeok Innopolis becomes a world-class science cluster loved by the people.”
