Chosun University Hospital announced on the 24th that Professor Kim Minseong from the Department of Dermatology has achieved 2,000 cases of Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS), a surgical procedure for skin cancer.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a highly advanced technique that allows for the complete removal of skin cancer while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. It has become the global standard for skin cancer treatment.
Professor Kim Minseong played a pioneering role in establishing and advancing Mohs Micrographic Surgery in the region, at a time when the procedure was still unfamiliar in Korea.
The surgical method involves removing the skin cancer in small increments. After each removal, a microscopic examination is performed to check for the presence of cancer cells in the excised tissue. The process is repeated, mapping out the residual tumor areas, until all cancer cells are completely removed. The surgery typically takes 3 to 4 hours and is completed within 1 to 3 stages. In most cases, patients can return home and resume daily activities immediately after the procedure.
By removing the cancerous tissue and having a pathologist immediately determine the presence of cancer cells, only the affected area is re-excised if necessary. This allows for a quick return to daily life and is known to have a recurrence rate of less than 3%. The surgery also preserves function and minimizes scarring, resulting in high patient satisfaction.
In particular, Professor Kim has built trust among patients by achieving outstanding results in preserving normal skin and minimizing scarring, especially when treating skin cancer in exposed areas such as the face.
Professor Kim stated, "Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a very precise and delicate procedure that must consider not only the patient's life but also their quality of life," and added, "I will continue to do my best to provide optimal treatment for local skin cancer patients through early diagnosis and multidisciplinary collaboration based on the location of the cancer."
