Mapo-gu Remembers President Choi Kyu-ha's "Fair and Impartial" Spirit with an Honorary Road
Information Boards in Both Korean and English to Be Installed
Pavement Features Choi Kyu-ha Typeface Design
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-su) is creating an honorary road named "Choi Kyu-ha-gil" near the residence to honor the late Choi Kyu-ha, the 10th President of the Republic of Korea, and to widely promote the "Seoul Seogyo-dong Choi Kyu-ha House" (10 Donggyo-ro 15-gil).
Former President Choi Kyu-ha was the first person in Korean constitutional history to become president after serving as a fair and impartial career civil servant, progressing through positions such as section chief, bureau chief, vice minister, minister, and prime minister. His integrity and upright character serve as a model for future generations.
Additionally, the "Seoul Seogyo-dong Choi Kyu-ha House" is where former President Choi lived from 1973, when he was appointed Prime Minister, until his death in 2006 after resigning from the presidency. It was designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage site in 2008, reflecting its high historical value.
Accordingly, Mapo-gu plans to improve the surrounding environment of the house and assign an honorary road name so that more people can remember the life and achievements of former President Choi Kyu-ha.
The "Choi Kyu-ha-gil" created by Mapo-gu will extend approximately 90 meters from 1 to 18 Donggyo-ro 15-gil, where the Choi Kyu-ha House is located.
Mapo-gu will install information boards introducing the "Seoul Seogyo-dong Choi Kyu-ha House" and "Choi Kyu-ha-gil." The boards will be bilingual in Korean and English to ensure easy recognition by foreigners.
In particular, the house information board will include images and achievements of President Choi Kyu-ha to further enhance the value of the house and naturally attract visitors.
Additionally, the pavement will feature the words "Choi Kyu-ha-gil" designed in the "Choi Kyu-ha font" to improve visibility.
The naming ceremony celebrating the birth of "Choi Kyu-ha-gil" will be held at 3 p.m. on March 27 in front of the "Seoul Seogyo-dong Choi Kyu-ha House."
Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "Although the 'Seoul Seogyo-dong Choi Kyu-ha House' is registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage, it is located in a residential area and has not been fully recognized for its historical value, which is very regrettable. I hope that the honorary road 'Choi Kyu-ha-gil' will serve as an opportunity to honor President Choi Kyu-ha's life and achievements and to inform many people about him."
Last year, Mapo-gu created honorary roads "Seo Yun-bok-gil" to honor the late Seo Yun-bok, a marathon hero of Korea, and "Kim Dae-jung-gil" to commemorate the late former President Kim Dae-jung, a symbolic figure of democracy and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
