Trump Cancels Temporary Stay Permits for 530,000 Latin American Nationals in the US

U.S. President Donald Trump has canceled temporary stay permits for 530,000 Latin American nationals, AP News reported on the 21st (local time).

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced through the Federal Register that it will revoke stay permits for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela currently residing in the United States.

The measure will take effect starting from the 24th of next month.

This action follows the suspension of the 'Humanitarian Parole' program introduced during former President Joe Biden's administration.

The Biden administration had implemented a temporary stay permit program since 2022 to grant humanitarian stays to immigrants from certain countries who came to the U.S. fleeing political turmoil or economic hardship. If they have a financial sponsor in the U.S., they could stay for up to two years.

The Trump administration had stated its intention to stop the widespread abuse of humanitarian parole. During his presidential campaign, President Trump pledged to deport illegal immigrants and has been vigorously enforcing deportation policies since taking office.

The Department of Homeland Security stated, "Temporary stay is inherently temporary, and a temporary stay permit alone does not constitute grounds for obtaining immigration status." Those who fail to secure other stay permits besides temporary stay may be subject to deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security also noted that once stay permits are revoked, it will be easier to implement expedited deportation procedures for immigrants.

Meanwhile, President Trump said on the 6th that he will soon decide whether to revoke the stay status of 240,000 Ukrainians who came to the U.S. fleeing Russia's invasion.
