Uiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province announced on the 21st that it held graduation ceremonies for literacy education programs recognizing elementary school diplomas at two senior community centers on the 19th.

This graduation ceremony was held at the Sagok-myeon Bunhoe Senior Center and the Daeri 3-ri Senior Center in Geumseong-myeon. Sixteen graduates (seven from Sagok-myeon Bunhoe, nine from Daeri 3-ri) with an average age of 83 celebrated their achievements together with more than 70 people, including literacy instructors and local residents.
They enrolled in the first stage of the elementary program in 2022 and completed a total of 720 hours over 120 weeks in three years, achieving the meaningful result of receiving elementary school diploma recognition.
The oldest graduate, aged 98, shared, "I always regretted not having the opportunity to learn, but I am very happy to have obtained an elementary school diploma and graduated this time."
The 'Elementary School Diploma Recognition System' is a literacy education program for adults aged 18 and over who have not acquired an elementary school diploma.
If participants complete the entire six-year elementary curriculum in just three years, they can receive a certificate of elementary education recognition issued by the superintendent of education.
This is the first case of such a graduation since Uiseong County began adult literacy education in 2012.
This demonstrated the high enthusiasm for learning among local residents. Currently, an average of 303 residents participate in literacy education at 24 senior community centers each year in Uiseong County.
Kim Jusu, the mayor of Uiseong County, said, "I express my deep respect for the effort and passion of the seniors who did not give up and completed the entire program over three years," adding, "We will actively support lifelong education programs for adult learners in line with the era of centenarians."
