6G Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication System Technology MOU
Aiming for Ultra-High-Speed Communication Without Spatiotemporal Constraints
Pursuing the Construction of an Independent Korean Satellite Network
Hanwha Systems is embarking on the development of related technologies to secure a leading position in the '6G Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication' market. 6G Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication is a next-generation advanced communication service that implements 6th generation mobile communication (6G), known to be tens of times faster than 5th generation mobile communication (5G), through low earth orbit communication satellites.
Hanwha Systems announced on the 21st that it signed a '6G Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication System Technology Development Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)' with the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT, at the Hanwha Building located in Jung-gu, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by key executives from both organizations, including Son Jae-il, CEO of Hanwha Systems, and Bang Seung-chan, President of ETRI.

Hanwha Systems and ETRI plan to jointly develop foundational technologies in various fields necessary for realizing domestic 6G low earth orbit satellite communication, including ▲6G low earth orbit communication satellite development technology ▲network technology for multi-layer communication ▲semiconductor technology for space and aviation ▲intelligent electromagnetic spectrum management technology. Unlike existing terrestrial networks that can only be used on the ground, satellite networks feature communication services without spatiotemporal constraints, covering land, sea, and air, including remote areas.
Both organizations intend to independently build the low earth orbit satellite communication sector, where overseas companies such as Starlink and Amazon are currently expanding their markets, using purely domestic technology to secure communication sovereignty and to facilitate smooth global expansion in the future through strategic cooperation.
Song Seong-chan, Head of Hanwha Systems’ Space Business Division, said, "Through this MOU, Hanwha Systems has taken a step forward toward realizing ultra-high-speed space internet," adding, "We will continue to develop domestic military and civilian low earth orbit satellite communication service technologies to enhance the security of the Republic of Korea and the convenience of its people."
