Gokseong County Extends Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Victim Reporting Deadline to August 31

Eligible Cases: Death, Disappearance, Aftereffects, and Imprisonment

Gokseong County Extends Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Victim Reporting Deadline to August 31 Gokseong County Office building exterior.

Gokseong County, South Jeolla Province (Governor Jo Sangrae) announced on the 21st that the additional reporting period for the investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident and the restoration of honor for victims and their families will be extended until August 31.

This extension was implemented after it was confirmed that many people were unaware of the previous reporting period, which ended on December 31, 2023, and therefore were unable to file reports. Accordingly, the reporting period has been extended in line with the amendment to the Special Act on the Investigation and Restoration of Honor for Victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident.

The Yeosu-Suncheon Incident occurred on October 19, 1948, when some soldiers of the 14th Regiment of the National Army stationed in Yeosu refused the government's order to suppress the Jeju 4.3 Incident. As a result, many residents died or went missing, and many suffered long-term aftereffects.

An official from the county said, "Through this extension of the reporting period, we will strive to discover even one more victim, clear the names of those who have been wrongfully accused and passed away, and comfort the families who have lived in sorrow and pain for so many years."

The eligible cases include deaths, disappearances, aftereffects, and imprisonment related to incidents that occurred between October 19, 1948, and April 1, 1955, and cover military personnel, police officers, and civilians.
