Gwangju City Council Urges Constitutional Court for Swift Dismissal of Coup Leader Yoon

Democratic Party Lawmakers Issue Statement
"Democracy Collapsing Due to Far-Right Violence"

Gwangju City Council Urges Constitutional Court for Swift Dismissal of Coup Leader Yoon A view of Gwangju City Council.

The Gwangju City Council on the 21st urged, "The Constitutional Court must respect the will of the people and promptly remove President Yoon Sukyeol, the ringleader of the rebellion."

The council, in a statement issued under the name of "All Members of the Democratic Party of Korea," pointed out, "The threats from far-right extremists have reached their peak, as they throw eggs and commit assaults against members of the National Assembly holding press conferences in front of the Constitutional Court in broad daylight."

They continued, "As the Constitutional Court delays its ruling, the democratic values we have built up are being destroyed by the obstinacy of the rebellious forces and the violence of the far-right groups supporting them," adding, "The current reality is truly regrettable and deplorable."

They further lamented, "Yoon Sukyeol and his representatives keep making absurd claims that the president's declaration of martial law was justified and inevitable to overcome the national crisis," and added, "Far-right forces supporting the rebellion are occupying the courts, inciting riots, fueling conflict with hostility and hatred, and trampling on democracy and the rule of law."

The council members stated, "The people are angry and suffering from the current reality brought about by the illegal martial law, and are looking to the Constitutional Court with desperate hope," and added, "They earnestly wish for Yoon Sukyeol to be removed as soon as possible so that they can return to their peaceful daily lives."

They also argued, "How much longer will the Constitutional Court, which bears the grave responsibility of safeguarding constitutional order, continue to be swayed by the rebellious forces?" and emphasized, "The expectations of the people must never be betrayed any longer. For the future of the Republic of Korea and its people, a decision must be made now."

Meanwhile, they reiterated, "We strongly urge the Constitutional Court to promptly remove Yoon Sukyeol in accordance with the solemn will of the people."
