Conflict with Actors over Transgender Controversy
J.K. Rowling (59), the author of 'Harry Potter,' publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the lead actors who starred in the film adaptations of her novels, saying they "ruined the movies."
On the 19th (local time), Yonhap News quoted the British Telegraph reporting that Rowling responded on X (formerly Twitter) to a question asking, "Who is the actor that instantly ruined the movie for you?" by saying, "There are three possible guesses." Rowling's remarks are interpreted as referring to the three lead actors in the 'Harry Potter' film series: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.
In her reply, Rowling added, "Sorry, but I couldn't hold back," followed by three consecutive laughing-with-tears emojis.
Previously, Rowling had clashed with the 'Harry Potter' cast over differing views on transgender issues. In 2020, she publicly stated her position that the concept of biological sex (male and female) should be maintained, becoming the center of controversy. Despite strong criticism from transgender rights advocates, she stood firm, saying, "Attempts to deny sex distinctions cruelly discriminate against the realities experienced by those who have lived as biological women."
The lead actors of Harry Potter expressed criticism of Rowling's remarks.
Daniel Radcliffe, who played the protagonist Harry Potter, pointed out Rowling's comments by saying, "Transgender women are women," and "Any statement denying this erases the identity and dignity of transgender people." He also expressed deep regret for the pain caused by those remarks to anyone who feels their experience with the books has been tarnished or diminished.
Emma Watson, who played Hermione, also wrote on X, "Transgender people are who they say they are," adding, "They deserve to live without having their identity questioned."
Rupert Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley, stated in a press release, "I support the transgender community. Trans women are women, and trans men are men," and "We all deserve to live without judgment and with love."
However, Rowling has continued to publicly oppose transgender people who 'identify' as women. She has been expressing her views daily on X and responding to those who criticize or condemn her.
In November of last year, she made remarks on X that seemed to target Radcliffe and Watson, saying, "Celebrities have taken sides in a movement that weakens the hard-won rights of women and supports minors undergoing gender transition."
