After Breakup, Man Stalks Ex-Girlfriend by Sending 1 Won Transfers 200 Times
Leaves Messages with Each Transfer
Prosecution Requests 1 Year and 6 Months in Prison
A man in his 20s who stalked his ex-girlfriend by transferring 1 won about 200 times to her bank account while leaving messages such as "I miss you" was sentenced to prison.
On the 18th, according to the legal community, at the first trial and sentencing hearing of Mr. A held under the presiding of Chief Judge Kim Kwang-seop of Jeju District Court Criminal Division 1, the prosecution requested a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months for Mr. A on charges of violating the Stalking Crime Punishment Act. Additionally, they requested an order for Mr. A to complete a stalking treatment program.
After Mr. A was notified of the breakup by his partner on January 26, he sent messages such as "Can't you even say you miss me?" through KakaoTalk and other means, and on January 28, the court issued a restraining order against him.
However, Mr. A ignored this and transferred 1 won about 200 times to the victim's account on January 28 and 29, leaving messages like "I miss you" with the transfers. He also visited the victim in person. The prosecution explained the reason for the sentence by stating, "The victim felt fear to the extent that it interfered with daily life," but "considered the fact that the victim reached a settlement with the defendant."
Mr. A admitted to all charges and showed a remorseful attitude. His lawyer appealed, saying, "Mr. A emotionally reacted after suddenly being notified of the breakup by his partner, with whom he had dated for about a year," and "He has now been forgiven by the victim and has pledged not to contact her again, so we ask for leniency."
In his final statement, Mr. A said, "I am sorry to the victim and her family who forgave me unconditionally. I thought the contact was necessary, but I realized belatedly that I caused fear to the victim," and "I have never worn handcuffs in my life. I am reflecting on my actions during my time in detention. If you show leniency, I will prepare a settlement to restore the damage. I will never repeat such actions again." The court is scheduled to deliver the verdict for Mr. A on the 27th.
