"Protecting Citizens' Health
and Creating a Safe Residential Environment"
Namwon City in North Jeolla Province will implement the 2025 Slate Removal Support Project.
According to the city on the 20th, this slate removal support project was launched to protect citizens' health from asbestos, a Class 1 carcinogen, and to create a safe residential environment.
Following last year's project, which processed 390 slate buildings with a budget of 1.57475 billion KRW, the city plans to support the removal of 334 residential buildings, 65 non-residential buildings, and roof improvements for 27 buildings this year, investing a total of 1.65608 billion KRW to process a total of 426 slate buildings.
The removal cost for residential slate buildings is supported up to 7 million KRW per building, and for non-residential buildings such as warehouses, livestock sheds, senior and children's facilities, support is available for areas up to 200㎡. The maximum support for roof improvement is 5 million KRW, and for socially vulnerable groups, the full cost of removal and up to 10 million KRW for roof improvement can be supported.
Priority will be given to basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income groups, and other vulnerable groups, while general households will be processed sequentially in order of smaller slate area.
Citizens wishing to participate in the project should visit the administrative welfare center of the town, township, or neighborhood where the building is located, check the support criteria such as building use and area, and submit an application form according to the guidance of the responsible official.
An official from Namwon City stated, "Through this project, we will do our best to minimize health damage caused by asbestos slate and to create a safe residential environment," and added, "We ask for the active participation of building owners for the prompt removal of remaining slate."
