DeepMind Platform (hereinafter DeepMind) announced on the 20th that it has signed a technology transfer agreement with the Cryptography Research Laboratory of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) for the 'PQC-based TLS secure channel communication technology for drone security.'
This agreement includes innovative technology that quantum-encrypts all communications with the ground control center, following the quantum cryptographic communication technology between drones and controllers signed in January. Through this, DeepMind has secured a strong technological advantage in the quantum cryptography-based defense drone market.
In particular, this quantum cryptography technology has been selected as a standard by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a global standards organization, and this achievement is expected to become a milestone in quantum encryption technology in the defense drone sector.
Currently, South Korea's defense drone market is showing continuous growth and is expected to expand to about 1 trillion KRW by 2026. South Korea is actively investing in drone technology development and operational capability enhancement to strengthen its preparedness against military threats. Especially, the introduction of advanced defense drones equipped with reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike capabilities is actively underway, highlighting the increasing importance of security technology. In this environment, quantum cryptography-based security technology is expected to become an essential element.
Furthermore, the quantum cryptography technology introduced this time will be utilized as the core technology of DeepMind's upcoming '3D Drone Kill Chain' project. This project is a future strategy to build a three-dimensional precision surveillance, strike, and defense system using drones, where security based on quantum cryptography will be an essential component.
A DeepMind official stated, "Through this technology transfer, we plan to establish a cutting-edge security system that fundamentally blocks hacking and jamming attempts on defense drones," adding, "This technology transfer agreement is expected to be an important turning point in the defense drone industry, where security is paramount, and will be spotlighted not only domestically but also in the global defense market."
