Gyeonggi Province to Ease Residents' Transportation Costs Amid Inflation and Economic Downturn
Support Measures Underway, Including Facility Improvements and Free Usage for Ilsan Bridge
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it will freeze toll fees on three privately financed roads managed by the province: Ilsan Bridge, the 3rd Gyeongin Expressway, and the Seo-Suwon to Uiwang Expressway.
This measure aims to alleviate the transportation cost burden on residents facing difficulties due to rapid inflation and economic recession. The province explained that since toll fees were raised in October last year for the 3rd Gyeongin and Seo-Suwon to Uiwang roads, an additional increase within six months could further strain residents' financial burdens.
The government also held the ‘2nd Central-Local Policy Council Meeting of 2025’ on the 21st of last month, requesting to ‘minimize public utility fee increases and, if unavoidable, to stagger and defer the timing as much as possible.’
The three private road companies plan to inform the public of the toll freeze decision through electronic signboards installed along the roads.
Additionally, the province is promoting support measures such as facility improvements and free usage to enhance convenience for users of Ilsan Bridge, the only toll bridge over the Han River.
To ease traffic congestion on Ilsan Bridge during peak commuting hours, the province plans to install two Hi-Pass lanes within this year to facilitate smooth vehicle flow, while also making every effort to negotiate toll-free usage.
Kang Seong-seup, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Construction Bureau, stated, “Gyeonggi Province is making multifaceted efforts to suppress toll increases, including being the first nationwide to minimize toll hikes by reclaiming usage fees on the Seo-Suwon to Uiwang Expressway.” He added, “We will carefully review price fluctuations and economic conditions in the future to prudently adjust the timing of any increases and consider various measures to restrain toll hikes.”
