Customized Education Programs Such as Companion Dog Behavior Correction and Academy, Plus Convenience Facilities Including Self-Dry Room
Contributing to Responsible Companion Culture by Supporting Temporary Shelter and Adoption for Abandoned Animals
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) operates the ‘Nowon Companion Animal Culture Center (Healing Hasigae! Daengdaeng House)’ and runs various programs to establish a proper companion culture.
Since its opening in 2020, the Nowon Companion Animal Culture Center has focused on creating an environment where both pet owners and non-pet owners can coexist by protecting and supporting the adoption of abandoned animals, providing companion culture education, and operating convenience facilities for companion families.
First, various companion culture education programs are offered to create a happy environment for companion families and their pets. These include ▲Companion Dog Behavior Correction Education, which provides proper training methods for dogs showing problematic behavior and their owners; ▲Companion Dog Academy, which offers practical education such as making homemade treats and dog fitness; and ▲Abandoned Animal Adoption Education before and after adoption for families adopting abandoned dogs through Daengdaeng House. There are also tour programs for children and lower-grade students.
Convenience facilities for companion families are also provided. An open caf? where pets and owners can relax together, called ▲Daengdaeng Caf?, and a ▲Self-Dry Room for owners who find it difficult to bathe their dogs at home are operated. The Self-Dry Room is equipped with a bathtub and dryer, allowing owners to bathe and dry their dogs themselves. This facility operates by reservation and charges a usage fee of 1,000 KRW per hour.
Additionally, to promote mutual communication among pet owners, the center space is available free of charge for related organizations and small groups. Applications can be made through the website at least five days in advance.
The center also plays a role in temporarily sheltering and supporting the adoption of abandoned and lost animals. Abandoned or lost animals found in the area are temporarily sheltered after a public notice for the owner’s return; if no owner appears, they are cared for until a suitable adopter is found. Families wishing to adopt receive counseling and education to establish a responsible companion culture.
Along with operating the Companion Animal Culture Center, the district continuously expands pet-friendly policies that allow pet owners and non-pet owners to coexist harmoniously. Various programs are run to establish a mature companion culture, including ▲a dog care shelter operated during holiday periods, ▲the creation of a companion animal playground, and ▲hosting companion animal cultural festivals where pets and owners can enjoy together.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “As the number of households with companion animals increases, welfare and convenience facilities for companion families are becoming more important beyond simple protection. We will continue to promote various policies to create an environment where people and animals can be happy together.”
