"Respect Until the End for Veterans"... Mapo-gu Truly Cares for National Veterans

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) will implement the ‘National Veterans Funeral Service’ project in 2025 to honor the final journey of national veterans who have dedicated and sacrificed for the country.

Those who participated in the Korean War at the age of twenty will turn 95 in 2025. Due to the aging of national veterans such as war veterans, the need for posthumous services like funeral services is increasing.

The ‘National Veterans Funeral Service’ is a service provided upon the death of the national veteran or their primary surviving family member who is a resident of Mapo-gu. The service, worth approximately 300,000 KRW, includes a condolence flag, a portrait basket, funeral supplies (for 250 people), and a funeral assistant (for one day), provided through a specialized funeral service company.

Applications can be made on weekdays from 9 AM to 6 PM at the Welfare Policy Division of Mapo-gu Office. During nights and holidays, calling the district office duty room will allow for qualification verification and same-day service provision.

Additionally, the district provides a death condolence payment of 200,000 KRW to the bereaved families of national veterans. Applications must be made within one year from the date of death by visiting the local community service center with a death certificate, a copy of the national veterans registration card, proof of family relationship, and a copy of the bankbook.

Furthermore, in 2025, Mapo-gu will increase the monthly combat honor allowance and veterans’ honor allowance paid to national veterans and their primary surviving family members by 10,000 KRW, raising the amount to 70,000 KRW per month. Eligible recipients can apply at their local community service center with their national veterans registration card and a copy of their bankbook.

Also, a new ‘Welfare Allowance for Spouses of Deceased War Veterans’ has been established to provide 70,000 KRW monthly to spouses of deceased war veterans who do not qualify for separate veterans benefits and are thus in a support blind spot.

To apply, applicants must visit their local community service center with a confirmation letter of war veteran status issued by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, a family relation certificate, other supporting documents, and a copy of their bankbook.

In June, Mapo-gu will hold the 3rd National Veterans Appreciation Festival, expressing respect and gratitude to national veterans. This will be an opportunity to practice honoring veterans in daily life and to promote veterans culture to future generations.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Supporting funeral services is a project to honor national veterans until the very end and to elevate the honor and pride of their families,” adding, “Mapo-gu will strive to spread a culture of honoring veterans by practicing it in everyday life.”
