"Political broker" Myeong Tae-gyun has been summoned as a witness for the urgent current issues inquiry scheduled for the 26th at the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee. The ruling party has strongly opposed this.
On the afternoon of the 19th, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee held a plenary meeting at the National Assembly, where the request for Myeong's witness appearance was put on the agenda and passed with 11 votes in favor and 7 against.
Yoo Sang-beom, the ruling party's floor leader in the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a member of the People Power Party, said, "For some time now, it has become routine for the National Assembly to intervene in investigations whenever cases arise, whether by the prosecution, police, or the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials. The People Power Party cannot agree to summoning key figures involved in major cases for questioning in this manner."
Jeong Cheong-rae, chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, stated, "It is necessary to investigate whether Myeong was directly the trigger behind the emergency martial law and rebellion incident, and whether the various claims he continues to make through intermediaries are true, from the perspective of the public's right to know. It is the National Assembly's duty to resolve these suspicions," and proceeded with the vote.
Park Ji-won, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, "Decades ago, during the special prosecutor investigation into North Korean remittances, I was under prosecution and detained but still appeared as a witness for a state audit or at the National Assembly. Because there are multiple suspicions involving Myeong, including election interference by Yoon Seok-yeol and Kim Geon-hee, as well as relationships with People Power Party candidates such as Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, he must be summoned as a witness even if under investigation."
Earlier, the Legislation and Judiciary Committee had planned to hold a current issues inquiry related to the Myeong Tae-gyun gate on the 19th of this month, but it was canceled after Myeong announced he would not attend.
