Busan Office of Education Launches 'Student Reading Pledge Project'

Support for Developing Reading Habits Across All School Ages
Joint Implementation by Ten Libraries under the Office of Education

Ten public libraries under the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education will conduct the 'Student Reading Pledge Project' to support the development of reading habits among students of all school ages.

This project is a joint initiative by libraries affiliated with the Office of Education to foster a reading culture in society and promote student reading.

The project consists of two programs: 'The Library Came to Our Home' and 'Challenge! Reading Books.' Last year, it was operated for preschoolers and elementary students, but starting this year, it has been expanded to include all students from preschool to high school.

'The Library Came to Our Home' targets library members who are preschoolers and third-grade elementary students, lending them 30 to 50 books and a foldable bookshelf (or bookcase) to read at home for a month before returning. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis at each library starting from the third Tuesday of every month.

'Challenge! Reading Books' is a challenge program running until December, where students aim to read a target number of books according to their age group. It is open to students from fourth grade in elementary school to high school. Elementary students challenge themselves to read 100 books per year, while middle and high school students aim for 50 and 30 books respectively. Participant registration at each library begins on the 18th.

Recruitment for program participants is conducted individually at the ten public libraries under the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education, including Citizen Library. Details on how to apply and participate can be found on each library's website.

Sung Soyeon, Director of Planning and Coordination at the Office of Education, said, "We hope this will be an opportunity for students to find enjoyment in reading with the library and develop proper reading habits."
