On the 14th, Asan City in South Chungcheong Province announced that it will switch the rice variety used for processing from 'Boramchan' to 'Donghaeng' in response to climate change.

Since 2013, the city has been contract farming Boramchan, a variety developed by the Rural Development Administration, under an agreement with CJ. However, due to prolonged high temperatures during the grain-filling stage, both yield and quality have decreased.

Donghaeng, developed by CJ in 2022, is more resistant to high temperatures compared to Boramchan and has an earlier heading date.

This year, the contract farming area covers 1,430 hectares. The city expects Donghaeng, along with Asan Malgeun Rice, to contribute to stabilizing farmers' incomes.

Meanwhile, to reduce the burden on farmers, the city is allocating a total budget of 630 million won to support contract farming price differences, purchase fund interest, and transportation costs.
