Professor Baek is recognized for having elucidated, for the first time in the world, the principles underlying the development of the visual cortex brain map, one of the challenging problems in neuroscience, and for securing expertise in original theoretical research through over a decade of study.

As a first-generation computational neuroscientist in Korea, he is pioneering the field of computational neuroscience, which systematically explains various phenomena in neuroscience through theoretical model-based brain research.

Recently, he has been conducting research on theories of cognitive intelligence emergence based on comparisons between brain neural networks and artificial neural networks, aiming to understand human and animal intelligence as well as artificial intelligence within a unified framework.

Science Advances, where Professor Baek will serve as Associate Editor, is an online sister journal of Science published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), covering influential research across all scientific fields.

As of last year, the acceptance rate for publication was only 8.2%, reflecting the high standards for research results and the rigorous review process it is known for.

Professor Baek will participate in the review and editorial work of research papers in the neuroscience section, playing a role in disseminating scientific discoveries to researchers worldwide.

Professor Baek expressed, “It is meaningful to serve as an editorial board member of a globally recognized prestigious journal. In the process of reviewing and publishing various research results in the field of brain neuroscience, I will contribute to setting the development and direction of brain neuroscience research together with researchers worldwide.”

Meanwhile, Professor Baek has also served as Associate Editor and editorial board member for neuroscience journals published by the Springer-Nature and Frontiers groups.

In 2021, he was appointed as a KAIST Singularity Professor, and since last year, he has been leading the Korean Computational Brain Science Society (CBrain) as its president.
