Fostering Industry-Specific Talent in Construction Machinery
Strengthening Industry-Academia Cooperation
Lee Seunghwan, President of Gumi University in North Gyeongsang Province, signed a memorandum of understanding for fostering technical talent in the construction machinery sector with Choi Cheolgon, CEO of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment Co., Ltd., and Hwang Soosung, President of Korea Polytechnic University.

The signing ceremony, held on the 12th at the HD Hyundai Construction Equipment Global Training Center, was attended by Lee Seunghwan, President of Gumi University, Choi Cheolgon, CEO of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, and Hwang Soosung, President of Korea Polytechnic University, where they discussed cooperation strategies.
Through this agreement, the parties will promote various collaborative projects, including: joint educational programs for cultivating industry-ready talent; support for employment connections and domestic and overseas field training; development of curricula to respond to new technologies and industries; and the advancement of joint research and technological cooperation.
Since 2021, Gumi University has been collaborating with the HD Hyundai Construction Equipment Global Training Center to support student education. Since 2022, the university has also been operating a new training program for construction machinery maintenance targeting both graduates and current students, continuing ongoing industry-academic cooperation.
Choi Cheolgon, CEO of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, stated, "Through this agreement with Gumi University, which boasts excellent educational infrastructure, we expect to further strengthen the competitiveness of the construction machinery industry," adding, "We will continue to actively secure professional talent required in the industrial field."
Hwang Soosung, President of Korea Polytechnic University, said, "In the midst of rapid changes in the construction machinery industry, nurturing practical talent is crucial," and expressed hope that "this agreement will lead to tangible results through collaboration between enterprises and universities."
Lee Seunghwan, President of Gumi University, emphasized, "The Department of Special Construction Machinery Engineering at Gumi University is fostering next-generation technical professionals through advanced education in the operation and maintenance of construction machinery," and added, "We will provide even more practical educational programs through cooperation with HD Hyundai Construction Equipment."
Meanwhile, the Department of Special Construction Machinery Engineering at Gumi University is the only department in Korea that trains construction machinery technical warrant officers and engineers, operating customized curricula reflecting industry demand. It is also the only university in Korea to operate a national construction machinery technical qualification testing center.
