Composed of 16 Members Including the Director of the Railroad Construction Bureau
Seeking Step-by-Step Solutions
Daejeon City announced that it will seek step-by-step solutions for the introduction of vehicles and route design in relation to the pilot project for a new transportation system (three-section articulated bus), which is being promoted for the first time in Korea.
The city held the first meeting of the "New Transportation System Pilot Project Task Force" on the 12th to expedite the project, following the pilot project's approval for regulatory sandbox exemption by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Mobility Innovation Committee in January.
The Task Force, headed by the Director of the Railroad Construction Bureau, consists of 16 members from seven departments and one corporation, including the Transportation Bureau, Urban Railroad Construction Bureau, and the Transportation Corporation. The team will discuss key agenda items for each stage: route and plan design (Stage 1), operational preparation (Stage 2), and opening (Stage 3).
Stage 1 (March to July) will focus on establishing infrastructure, such as vehicle ordering and certification, construction of new stations and turnarounds, expansion of stopping areas, and setting signal systems and depot signal cycles.
Stage 2 (August to December) will address license application requirements and legal depot facility construction, while Stage 3 will focus on opening the pilot route, public promotion, and post-evaluation of the regulatory sandbox exemption.
At the TF meeting chaired by Yoo Deukwon, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs, a policy advisory committee was also formed, consisting of 12 experts in road traffic, systems, and vehicles, including Lee Joon, Head of the Railway Policy Research Division at the Korea Railroad Research Institute, in the S-BRT field.
The city plans to resolve legal and technical issues related to the introduction of the new transportation system through review by responsible officials and expert advisors in each field, depending on project progress.
The city aims to open the first stage section, from Yuseong Oncheon Station Intersection to Gasuwon Intersection (6.2km, excluding tram-mixed sections), as early as the end of this year. The remaining extension section from Chungnam National University to Jeongnim Samgeori (7.8km, tram-mixed section) will be fully opened in conjunction with the opening of Urban Railway Line 2 tram.
Yoo Deukwon, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs, said, "The dedication and roles of TF members and advisory committee members are extremely important for the successful implementation of the regulatory sandbox pilot project," and added, "Let us all pool our wisdom so that Daejeon City can become a national role model for future transportation and a turning point for the development of low-cost, high-efficiency public transportation nationwide."
