Full-scale Launch of MyData Initiative on the 13th
Priority Application in Medical, Telecommunications, and Energy Sectors
Personal Information Commission: "I Am the Owner of My Data"
The 'MyData' initiative, which allows individuals to use their personal information where they want to save money and improve their quality of life, is being fully launched. For example, you can receive recommendations for the optimal mobile phone plan based on your usage patterns, or set alerts for entering the progressive electricity billing tier by analyzing your electricity consumption.
On the 13th, the Personal Information Protection Commission announced, "The MyData provisions across all sectors, introduced in the March 2023 amendment of the Personal Information Protection Act, will take effect today after a transition period." Until now, this system was implemented only in limited areas such as finance and public sectors under individual laws, but now it can be applied across all sectors. Initially, the system will be implemented in the medical and telecommunications sectors, and by June next year, the energy sector including electricity will be added. Subsequently, it will be gradually expanded to sectors closely related to citizens' daily lives.
The Personal Information Protection Commission explained, "With the implementation of MyData across all sectors, data subjects can manage their personal information under their control and utilize it for desired services." For example, Mr. A can save on communication fees by allowing a MyData provider offering customized telecom plan recommendations to receive his communication usage and billing information held by the mobile carrier.
The Commission plans to open a 'Government-wide MyData Support Platform (tentative name)' in the first half of this year to support data subjects in exercising their MyData-related rights. Through this platform, users can check the status of businesses holding their personal information and MyData providers. It will also be possible to review past transmission requests and withdraw transmission requests.
Ko Hak-su, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, "Through the implementation of MyData across all sectors, citizens can become the true owners of their data," adding, "We plan to gradually expand the system starting with sectors that have significant impact and are easily felt by the public, based on feedback from various fields." The Commission will publish a guidebook on the system on its official website and hold briefing sessions within this month.
