Completion of the Blueprint for the “Rural Capital” Vision and Strategy
Accelerating the Establishment of Climate Change Response and Carbon Neutrality Systems
Haenam County, South Jeolla Province (Governor Myung Hyun-gwan), which is actively promoting its vision as a garden city, will host the 'Haenam Garden City Forum' at Haenam126 Hotel on the 13th.
According to the county on the 10th, in response to the climate crisis and the effects of the pandemic, efforts to establish a system for climate change adaptation and carbon neutrality are accelerating. The county is completing the blueprint for the strategy of making Haenam, a livable and beautiful “rural capital,” through the creation of a garden city.
This forum, under the theme “Garden City, Blooming at Haenam, Land’s End,” will feature lectures and discussions by the Korea Forest Service, Jeollanam-do, and garden experts. It aims to discuss the policy direction for Haenam as a garden city and ways to vitalize garden culture.
The forum will begin with keynote lectures: “Vision and Strategy for Haenam Garden City” by Cho Kyung-jin, Chair of the Garden City Forum Committee at Seoul National University, and “Garden Trends and Garden City Direction” by Nam Soo-hwan, Director at Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Service. This will be followed by presentations and a comprehensive discussion featuring Kim Inho, Director of the Environmental Education Innovation Research Institute, Lee Byungchul, CEO of Ayoung Co., Ltd., and Hwang Seunghum, Professor at Kookmin University.
Forum participants will be offered discounted accommodation at Haenam126 Hotel, and a free tour at Sani Garden will be held on the 14th, making it a stay-type forum. In addition, Haenam County, Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Service, and Southwest Coast Enterprise City will sign a memorandum of understanding to establish garden city policies through the forum.
The county is actively pursuing various garden creation projects with the goal of “Garden City Haenam” to create sustainable rural landscapes and improve residential conditions. The Southwest Coast Ecological Garden City, a new paradigm that expands gardens to the entire city, will begin construction this year on 580,000 square meters within the Solaseado Enterprise City district.
In addition to Sani Garden, which opened last year, nine private gardens have been established. Moon Garden and Biwon, the first and second private gardens in Haenam, as well as Forest Arboretum, the county’s first private arboretum, are attracting more visitors each year and contributing to the increase in the resident population. Recently, the Gil Garden, utilizing the wild green tea fields of Daeheungsa Temple, and the Gosan Ouga Garden, a Korean traditional park within the Gosan Historic Site, have also opened, showcasing Haenam’s unique garden culture to tourists.
This year, the Mashil Garden project, created directly by local residents, has begun and is expected to serve as an opportunity to spread garden culture across 14 towns and villages.
A county official stated, “We expect this forum to raise public consensus and understanding about the direction of Haenam Garden City,” adding, “We will ensure that improving residential conditions and creating a garden city for sustainable rural development serves as the foundation for completing the blueprint of ‘the rural capital, Haenam.’”
