Nowon-gu Exhibition 'Masters of New York' Sparks Increased Interest in Contemporary Art

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it is operating various programs to help local residents easily understand and embrace contemporary art in conjunction with the 'Masters of New York' exhibition.

To commemorate the opening of the 'Nowon Art Museum' within the Nowon Culture and Arts Center, Nowon-gu has been hosting the special exhibition 'Masters of New York' since January. This is the first opportunity in Korea to see major works by leading Abstract Expressionist artists who made a significant mark in the history of contemporary art, running until July 12.

However, contemporary art is often perceived as "difficult to understand," and many people find it challenging to appreciate. In response, the district decided to offer various programs to make contemporary art more accessible to residents.

First, education on 'How to Appreciate Contemporary Art' was provided to community committee members and volunteers active in the neighborhood. The program was designed not only to teach simple appreciation methods but also to enable community members to understand contemporary art and naturally share this understanding with other residents. The idea is that if art is first understood within the community, the entire area can become culturally richer.

At the training held on March 7 in the district office auditorium, docent Lee Jeong-han, currently active as a docent for the 'Masters of New York' exhibition, led the lecture.

Participants learned contemporary art appreciation methods tailored for 'Mi-Al-Mot' (people unfamiliar with art) and acquired ways to deeply understand the exhibited works. They also shared their personal impressions by uploading reviews on social networks after the viewing session.

One resident who participated in the training said, "Based on what I learned today, I want to visit the exhibition soon," adding, "Now that I have learned, I am even happier that I can see a high-quality exhibition right near my home."

The district explained that the 'Masters of New York' exhibition has sparked enthusiastic interest among residents. Recently, 'Gajaeul Jihemaru,' a community space in Hagye 1-dong, planned and will operate a four-week museum outing program reflecting residents' needs.

Additionally, the Nowon Cultural Foundation, which manages the exhibition, is preparing programs suitable for students' field trips with the start of the school term. In cooperation with nearby 'Bulgamsan Deobureo Forest' and the Nowon Traditional Culture Experience Center 'Dawanjae,' they plan to offer a one-day field trip combining art education, physical activities, and traditional culture experiences.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, "Now, you don't have to make a special effort to visit an art museum; you can experience high-quality art right in our neighborhood," adding, "We will continue to prepare programs that provide residents with opportunities to embrace a broader world of art, like the 'Masters of New York' exhibition."
