Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his determination to continue cracking down on corruption within the military this year as well.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 8th (local time), President Xi, who is also the Chairman of the Central Military Commission, stated at the plenary meeting of the People's Liberation Army and Armed Police Force delegation held on the occasion of the National People's Congress the previous day, "A sound and effective supervision system must be established to thoroughly investigate and resolve corruption."
President Xi has been intensifying corruption investigations within the People's Liberation Army for about two years. Amid this, he indicated his intention to continue purging corruption this year as well.
Previously, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, who were appointed as Ministers of National Defense, were ousted last year due to corruption issues. Miao Hua, ranked fifth in the Chinese military hierarchy, has also been under investigation since November last year, with his duties as a member of the Central Military Commission and Director of the Political Work Department suspended.
The Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported in January that about 14 military personnel have been stripped of their qualifications as National People's Congress representatives since March 2023, marking the largest scale in about 40 years.
