Personal Information Protection Commission
Inspects Smart Automobile Companies Including BYD
The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 7th that it received a response from the Chinese electric vehicle company BYD stating that they will comply with South Korea's personal information protection standards when launching new vehicles.
According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, BYD Korea stated, "We have already begun improving our personal information processing policies and user manuals, and plan to fully reflect South Korea's Personal Information Protection Act before launching products domestically." The commission inquired with BYD Korea regarding the controversy over personal information leakage related to BYD vehicles scheduled for domestic release.
Previously, BYD announced that it would equip autonomous vehicles with software developed by the Chinese AI startup DeepSea. This raised concerns that personal information such as driving records and call logs could be transferred to China.
Additionally, the Personal Information Protection Commission has been conducting inspections in the smart automobile sector since last year. Going forward, it plans to inspect companies including BYD, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.
A representative from the Personal Information Protection Commission stated, "We will make every effort to ensure that the personal information of our data subjects is safely protected and that related services can be activated."
