National Museum of Korea Kiosk Sign Language Recognition Rate Increased to 90%

The National Museum of Korea announced on the 7th that it has improved the smart kiosk functions for exhibition guidance to be conveniently used by both disabled and non-disabled visitors.

According to the National Museum of Korea, the sign language recognition rate of the sign language avatar for deaf (sign language users) visitors has been improved, increasing the recognition accuracy to 90%. In addition, the overall functions such as the placement location of kiosks and screen ratios were adjusted to enhance convenience for disabled visitors.

This process was carried out as part of the "Barrier-Free Smart Exhibition Hall" project, which has been implemented since 2003. To improve accessibility functions according to types of disabilities, the smart kiosks were equipped with automatic height adjustment, braille keypads for visually impaired visitors, voice guidance, and sign language avatar functions for hearing-impaired visitors.

Currently, there are 4 smart kiosks installed at the National Museum of Korea and 8 kiosks installed at its five affiliated museums (Gyeongju, Gwangju, Buyeo, Chuncheon, Naju), operating a total of 12 units.

A representative of the National Museum of Korea said, “We expect the smart kiosks to serve as a good precedent for ‘barrier-free kiosks,’” and added, “We plan to continuously improve and expand the smart kiosk services by reflecting visitors’ needs in the future.”
