Vietnam Prime Minister Requests Korean Companies to Expand Investment in Semiconductors and AI

Pham Minh Chinh, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, requested local Korean companies on the 5th (local time) to increase investments in advanced technology sectors such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI).


According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (Hanoi Korcham) and the local media VN Express on the same day, Prime Minister Chinh made these remarks during a meeting with Korean companies in Hanoi the previous day.

Prime Minister Chinh expressed gratitude, saying, "I appreciate Korean companies for standing with Vietnam during difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic and participating not only in the Vietnamese economy but also in social welfare," and stated that efforts will be focused on improving systems and infrastructure, workforce development, cost reduction, and eliminating various barriers for the convenience of Korean companies and others in the future.


In particular, he asked Korean companies to expand their investments in Vietnam by transferring advanced technologies and assisting in the development of high-level Vietnamese talent. He also requested that Korean companies establish research and development (R&D) centers locally and continue to bring Korean experts and skilled personnel.


Choi Young-sam, the Korean Ambassador to Vietnam who attended the meeting, expressed expectations for cooperation between the two countries in large-scale infrastructure projects promoted by Vietnam, such as nuclear power plants and the North-South high-speed railway. Ko Tae-yeon, Chairman of Hanoi Korcham, emphasized improvements in laws, systems, and policies to expand investment in advanced technology industries, as well as the efficiency of export-import logistics systems.


Na Ki-hong, Head of Vietnam Samsung Strategic Cooperation Office and General Manager of Samsung Electronics Vietnam, proposed the establishment of specific investment support fund implementation policies and the enactment of laws related to fostering advanced technology industries and R&D. Moon Byung-heon, Head of LG Electronics Haiphong Corporation, announced future additional investment plans and requested stabilization of the business environment through adjustment of import tariffs with the United States, improvement of logistics lead times through expansion of Haiphong International Airport, and stabilization of power supply.
