As the nationwide trend of population aging accelerates, Taean County in South Chungcheong Province is allocating a record-high budget of over 100 billion KRW to support a happy retirement for its senior citizens.

Taean County announced that it has allocated a total budget of 104.6 billion KRW this year for senior welfare, including support for senior employment. This is an increase of 8.9 billion KRW compared to last year's 95.7 billion KRW.

This year, the county will provide senior jobs to 5,467 people, an increase of 350 compared to last year. This is the highest number ever and the largest in the province for five consecutive years, with a budget of 21.915 billion KRW allocated.

The county officially launched the project last month with a senior job inauguration ceremony and plans to strengthen safety education and conduct on-site monitoring to ensure the safety of participants.

To promote leisure activities for seniors, the county will spend 3.5 billion KRW this year to support the operation of three senior welfare centers and will also support the operation of senior community centers and the provision of various programs to help seniors enjoy an active retirement.

In particular, in line with national policy, the county has changed the additional heating cost support for senior community centers, which was previously funded by the county, to operating expenses, thereby improving conditions for meal provision at these centers.

This year, a total of 700 million KRW will be invested to build two new senior community centers, enhance the functionality of existing facilities, and provide necessary supplies, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment.

In addition, the county will continue to provide the basic pension to about 16,000 residents aged 65 and older every month, and will invest a total of 2.2 billion KRW to provide customized care services and emergency safety services to about 3,000 seniors.

Furthermore, 3.2 billion KRW has been allocated for the “Senior Nutrition Plus Project,” an independent initiative launched in 2023, to address nutritional imbalances, and through the “Our Village True Senior Support Project,” the county will provide health supplies to seniors celebrating their 90th birthday.

County Mayor Gasero said, “Since Taean County entered a super-aged society in 2010 and currently has 37.5% of its population aged 65 or older, promoting welfare policies for seniors is extremely important. We will continue to develop a variety of initiatives to ensure a happy retirement for our seniors and do our best to build a healthy Taean County.”
