Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 5th that it will host the match between South Korea and Oman in the 3rd round of the 2026 FIFA CONCACAF World Cup Asian qualifiers at Goyang Sports Complex on the 20th.

This match will be the first national team game held at Goyang Sports Complex in 2 years and 6 months since the Hana Bank Invitational friendly match between South Korea and Costa Rica in September 2022.

At that time, the match ended in a 2-2 draw with the outstanding performance of player Son Heung-min, and about 40,000 spectators attended the stadium, creating a great atmosphere.

In this qualifier, South Korea is in Group B along with Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Palestine, and Kuwait, currently leading the group with 4 wins and 2 draws (14 points).

Depending on the two consecutive matches against Oman and Jordan held this March, South Korea could secure early qualification for the finals regardless of the remaining match against Kuwait in June. Also, if South Korea finishes first in Group B in this qualifier, it is highly likely to be assigned to the upper pot (Pot 2) in the group draw. Being assigned to Pot 2 reduces the chance of being grouped with strong teams, which is expected to result in a more favorable group composition.

In the 2nd round of the 2026 FIFA CONCACAF World Cup Asian qualifiers held last September at Sultan Qaboos Stadium in Muscat, Oman, South Korea defeated Oman 3-1 with goals from Hwang Hee-chan, Son Heung-min, and Joo Min-kyu, maintaining an advantage in the group lead race. In particular, Son Heung-min led the team to victory with 1 goal and 2 assists.
