Pohang City Aims for Zero Industrial Accidents... Accelerates Strengthening of Safety and Health Management System

Establishing a Comprehensive Plan to Become a Leading City in Industrial Safety
Building an Integrated Smart Safety and Health Management System

Pohang City is strengthening its safety and health management system by establishing a comprehensive plan to prevent industrial accidents and create a safe working environment, aiming for "zero industrial accidents."

Since establishing a dedicated organization for industrial accident prevention in 2023, the city has continuously expanded its budget annually to enhance worker safety through risk assessments, work environment measurements, special health examinations, and investigations of harmful factors in musculoskeletal burden tasks.

In particular, the city is expanding the operation of "Safety and Health Keepers," utilizing private industrial safety experts to strengthen practical safety inspections and preventive measures on-site.

Starting this year, to proactively respond to major accidents and industrial disasters, Pohang City has introduced a pre-safety consulting system for high-risk departments and is actively working on building an integrated smart safety and health management system using AI-based big data.

Additionally, the city plans to expand the distribution of essential safety equipment, such as K-type ladders for frontline workers and employees, and strengthen worker safety through various new projects.

Furthermore, Pohang City holds the Industrial Safety and Health Committee quarterly to actively gather opinions from worker representatives and reflect them in policies, thereby preparing effective, field-centered safety and health measures.

Especially based on the fully revised "Pohang City Safety and Health Management Regulations" enacted in January this year, the city plans to systematically strengthen and gradually expand the safety and health activities of supervisors.

Alongside this, the city will continuously operate a process of identifying and improving issues by conducting regular safety and health field inspections for organized and substantial industrial accident prevention.

To solidify the major accident prevention monitoring system, the PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Action) will be applied to support more systematic and continuous safety management on-site.

Pohang City intends to actively fulfill legal obligations for industrial accident prevention and share major industrial accident cases to prevent recurrence of similar incidents, aiming to create a safe workplace free of accidents.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Ensuring worker safety in a rapidly changing labor environment is an essential task, and recent amendments to related laws have further emphasized the active role of local governments in industrial accident prevention. Pohang City will prioritize safety as the top value in industrial sites and do its best to create an environment where workers can work with peace of mind."
